Boygenius FAQs

01

How Did Boygenius Form?

Boygenius formed somewhat spontaneously and organically. The three members – Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers – were already acquainted with each other before the formation of the supergroup.

Lucy Dacus had known Julien Baker for years, having opened for her in D.C. They stayed in touch over email, exchanging book recommendations and seeking each other's wisdom. Julien Baker, in turn, had always told Lucy Dacus about Phoebe Bridgers. However, Phoebe and Lucy only met in the year the article was written. Despite their independent busy schedules touring, recording, and writing, the three of them decided to embark on a joint tour.

The idea of forming Boygenius solidified as they were planning the tour. The members wanted to make the tour special, so they decided to perform together and thought about recording a seven-inch for tour promotion. Initially, the plan was to do a cover song and maybe one original song, but as they started working together, they realized the special dynamic they had. The project evolved from a promotional effort into something more significant. Phoebe Bridgers mentioned that they hadn't even considered a second record before they started working together, but now they view Boygenius as another band.

The recording and songwriting process was described as spontaneous and easy. Despite their different musical styles, the members found it easy to get on the same page emotionally. They exchanged songs via email, listened to each other's work, and had a workshop once they were all together in the same place.
