I Heard It Through The Grapevine by The Slits is a song from their 1979 album Cut, originally by Marvin Gaye released in 1967. The Slits bring their own punk energy to this song. To me there’s like, three god tier versions of this song, which is the CCR version, the original Marvin Gaye version and then this one... all three have their own relative genre defining energies plugged into it.
The Slits version starts off with an almost tribal humming which is such a sick way to bring the track in, especially comparing it to the other two versions that I’ve talked about. Deep bass, shaky vocals and stuttered guitar rhythms drive the song into uncharted territory. It's raw and energetic, performed by some of the most controversial women in punk music. What's not to love.
